[Tasty Veggie Burger] Economical non-meat burger with plenty of flavour

I know I will never be able to become a vegetarian. Well, maybe I shouldn't say never.
Who would imagine Bill Clinton would go vegan. 
Wasn't he famous for his love of McDonald’s and junk food. But, he went vegan.
He is a dietary vegan  than a ethical vegan, though.
I look up both vegans and vegetarians, mainly because it is something I can't accomplish.

I think veganism is very noble and respectful.
In 1951, the British Vegan Society defined the "veganism" to mean "the doctrine that man should live without exploiting animals".

Wow. I agree to the doctrine.
I just can't live without bacon or cheese forever. :(
I don't have problem staying away from animal products for a few days and I do eat vegetarian meals for days on purpose or by chance.
But, after a few days, I start craving for meat and fish. And that crave is not something I can refrain from, since it is one of my basic instinct. But, I still admire who went vegetarian or vegan.

And a day I really want to become quasi-vegetarian,
I make a vegetarian dinner.
Veggie burgers are a good source of nutrients, proteins and vitamins,
and can also be healthy & hearty food.

This veggie burger is one of my favorite vegan recipe.
The recipe is adapted, but modified from a very popular veggie burger recipe.
The other day, I thought I was making a vegan dinner with this.

 And I declared "We are having a vegan dinner today!"
And Pablo who hasn't heard the word "vegan" before, asked what it was.
While I was explaining it to him,
Mr.D spoke, with dignity, "Madame, you put a slice of cheese in these burgers"
Alas~
  So I corrected my words.
We had a vegetarian dinner. Kids drank milk anyway, so even without cheese, we didn't have a vegan meal.

Well, this veggie burger recipe is quick and easy too.
We are all busy. We can't make labour intenstive meals all the time.
The important thing is that you make it from your heart :)

Here goes my version of veggie burger recipe.
This has plenty of flavour and texture thanks to red bell pepper and cumin.

Ingredients 1 (16-19 oz) canned black beans, drained and rinsed
 1/2 red bell pepper, cut into chunk
 1/2 onion, cut into wedges
 3 cloves garlic, peeled
4-5 sprigs Italian parsley
 1 egg
 1 tablespoon cumin
 3/4 cup bread crumbs
1/2 teaspoon salt
For burger
4-5 Wholewheat hamburger buns
Ketchup, mayonnaise, pickle and/or mustard
Cheese of your choice
Tomato, sliced

How to make

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and lightly oil a baking sheet.

2. Prepare breadcrumb.
3. Drain the black bean can, rinse and drain again.

In a medium bowl, mash black beans with a potato masher or a fork until thick and pasty.


4. In a food processor, finely chop bell pepper, onion, parsley and garlic.


5. Then stir into mashed beans and mix well.


6. In a small bowl, stir together egg, cumin, and salt.


7. Stir the egg mixture into the mashed beans.


8. Mix in bread crumbs until the mixture is sticky and holds together.


9. Divide mixture into four or five patties. I divided the mixture into five patties only because my kids can't really eat that large tall patties.


10. Place patties on baking sheet, and bake about 10 minutes on each side.

Tara~ patties are ready.

Place a patty on a bun and make your own burger how ever you like :)

I topped my patty with a slice of provolone cheese, a slice of tomato, and seasoned with dijon mustard and ketchup. :)
Isn't it easy?
It tastes soooooooo good. You will like it.

  1. Like you, I could never be a vegetarian. Seriously! After a few days, I, too, would start craving meat or fish, and especially BACON! However we do have vegetarian dinners on occasions. Sometimes I just crave vegetables. Hey, it happens. lol!

    I would have never known how t make a veggie burger, but this looks REALLY good, Colleen. Thank you for sharing your recipe, AND the pictures will help tremendously.

      as I told you, I'm on a budget :) Compared to the extra lean ground beef, this is a much economical meal :)

      I like texture and taste of this patty.
      Did I tell you that I put some budget cooking books on hold, as Karen(Sassymonkey) recommended.
