[French Connection] French Toast in French Style

In French, French toast is not called Pain grillé français (French toast). It actually is called Pain perdu of which translation of word to word is "lost bread." Why lost bread? It's because it's made with stale bread which cannot be eaten fresh. Then some stale bread is transformed into a nice dessert that is not bread anymore.

As you might know, French people don't eat hot breakfast. So pain perdu or French toast cannot be a breakfast item in France.

But, as we are not in France, we eat French toast, but only for breakfast/brunch. :) It has been years that I've made French toast with baguette. So we call it French connection in our household.  :) It's not any harder to make French toast with a baguette.

Here goes my French toast recipe with a little bit of French touch. (Warning: it's extremely simple.)
Ingredients
1/2 baguette (preferably one or two days old)
1 cup whipping cream
1 egg
butter
icing sugar

and
maple syrup & fruit (optional)

Directions

1. Beat eggs and  whipping cream together. Whisk until well blended. Pour into a shallow bowl or container.

2. Cut baguette into 1 inch thick slices.

3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, allowing bread to soak up some of the mixture.

If you use a stale baguette, leave the baguette slices in the egg mixture for a half hour or so in the fridge.

4. Melt some butter over a large skillet on medium high heat. Add as many slices of bread onto the skillet as will fit at a time.

5. Fry until brown on both sides, flipping the bread when necessary.

6. Sprinkle icing sugar before serving hot. (optional)

Serve hot with  maple syrup, and fruit of your choice.
I usually like serving french toast with strawberries, but I used all the strawberries for kids school snack. :(

It is a sweet breakfast and a great weekend morning treat for anybody.

Enjoy!

  1. You use whip cream instead of milk. I will try your recipe next time. Looks more tasty!
