[Irish Boiled cabbage and ham] Traditional Irish comfort food - Great recipe to use leftover ham

An Irish friend of mine gave me this recipe.
Ireland is one of the countries I've never visited so far. :(
I've traveled over 30 countries in my life, but I've never had a chance to go to Ireland.... :( I dream of visiting the country of Guinness and Celtic Woman some day. :)

My friend said that this Irish Boiled cabbaage and ham/bacon is the one food you could find at any restaurant in Dublin.
As soon as I saw this boiled ham and cabbage she brought for lunch, I knew that I liked it :)
I love all kinds of different food, including ethnic ones.

And I had leftover ham from Easter, which I threw in the freezer. This very Irish recipe seems like a saviour of my ham. And it was, indeed.
The traditional dish consists of unsliced back bacon boiled with cabbage and potatoes. Smoked bacon or ham is used too.

I am pretty sure this is one of the easiest recipe ever I tested. :)
Here goes the recipe.

Ingredients
1+1/2 lbs smoked ham  (I used leftover ham. That's why it's already sliced. If you are buying ham for this, buy a bone-in ham)
1 large onion
2-3 carrots, peeled
3-4 potatoes, peeled
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 head cabbage, cut into quarters
1 tablespoon whole peppercorn
2 whole bay leaves
4 cups chicken broth (I used the broth from ham bone) - Optional
Water

How to make:

1. Rinse and cut cabbage into wedges.

2. Place cabbage in a large pot along with garlic cloves, onions and quartered potatoes and carrots. Just cover vegetables with broth and/or water(if you needed); add bay leaves and peppercorns. Put peppercorns and bay leaves in a cheese cloth for easy removal after cooking. I didn't and it was so hard to remove peppercorns one by one. :(

3. Put ham into the pot.
Bring to boil, lower heat to low and allow to simmer for 30 minutes.

4. Bring to boil, lower heat to low and allow to simmer for 3-40 minutes before serving ham and vegetables, coated with broth or not.

5. Fill the plate with  ham with the cabbage, carrots, and potatoes.

It's very tasty! You don't even need to season. Seasoning is already enough, only with cured ham.
Enjoy!

  1. This is downright comfort food, Colleen, and I would make this any day of the week for my familia. By the way, there is NOTHING like cooking in a pot by Le Creuset. We have a very nice collection, and only hubby and I are allowed to cook with them, here at home. :)

Your recipe is simple and yet scrumptious!

    1. Good morning Virginia,
this is so easy and yummy that I understood immediately why it is a comfort food in Ireland.
I have only 4 items of Le Creuset. I want to have more, but it's too expensive here. I'm waiting until our next trip to either New York or Cincinnati where they have amazing Le Creuset outlets. There are so many great outlets in the States~ you know. I guess you have wonderful outlets in San Jose too?

Is your husband also a great cook like you? You should post about your husband's dish~

Thanks for your warm compliments. You made my morning~
      Have a nice day Nini.

  2. While sitting at the bowling alley, a voice came over the intercom saying, "Tonight we are hosting a raffle on a yummy yellow sheet cake for $1.00 a ticket. The proceeds will go to our youth bowling association." A yellow sheet cake, I thought? How often are you asked to bake a cake for a school auction, cake walks, parties or get-togethers? Bundt cakes makes excellent baked comfort food for these events. They are pretty cakes, make for a great presentation and could bring in more money than a yellow sheet cake. Another benefit of bundt cakes is that they are easy to transport to your event.

  3. Generally, a smaller neighborhood bakery baked recipes on the taste and quality of the goodies that they offer to their customers. This is the reason your local bakery get the most preference.
